Starring Ryan O'Neal as the hero, Isabella Rossellini as his former love, Debra Sandlund as the witchy, wild wife and Wings Hauser as the diabolical police captain, it is a study in extremes, just the kind of vehicle that is an actor's dream despite a difficult plot and that constant drumbeat of intrusion from the filmmaker.Chris Hammond is a high school senior. Mailer evidently enjoys telling this quirky tale - and seems to care less if anyone appreciates its black humor.
TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE - Norman Mailer's film is a hodgepodge, alternately beguiling and repulsive, incredibly ugly and remarkably beautiful, deadly serious and uproariously silly. Directed by Taylor Hackford, the film is a fascinating study in American myth-making. From the numerous testimonies offered by rock luminaries such as Carl Perkins and Bruce Springsteen to the magnificent reclamation of Berry's songs by an all-star band organized by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, the film shows Berry as he's never been seen before.
CHUCK BERRY HAIL! HAIL! ROCK 'N' ROLL - Part documentary, part concert film, 'Chuck Berry Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll' is a detailed, no-holds-barred look at one of the most important and mysterious figures in rock history. Harvey Keitel adds his usual frightening fury to the role as a mob enforcer. Dennis Hopper doesn't seem to be trying very hard, but nevertheless does a credible acting job as the drunken has-been gambler. Directed by James Toback, the movie tells the story of a pair of young lovers with a lot to prove - both to themselves and each other.Ī gambling angle gives the ordinariness a much-needed edge, but the Atlantic City scenes don't take near the advantage of that gambling resort as they could have. head the unusually talented cast of characters assembled for this small but taut film. THE PICK-UP ARTIST - Molly Ringwald and Robert Downey Jr. Included in the jam-packed cast of polished veterans - and newcomers - are Cary Elwes, as the swashbuckling Prince Westley Robin Wright, as the good, true and mouthy heroine Buttercup Mandy Patinkin as the vengeful Spanish swordsman Billy Crystal as the Jewish magic man, Miracle Max Christopher Guest as the evil Count Drugan, and wrestler Andre the Giant as the gentle giant Fezzik. The characters - both real and imaginary - give every frame of 'The Princess Bride' its own magic mirth. THE PRINCESS BRIDE - Directed by Rob Reiner and based on the William Goldman book of the same name, 'The Princess Bride' is a worthy descendent to the 'Fractured Fairytales' of yore. 'Like Father, Like Son' manages to have a heart along with a sense of humor. Both characters get a lesson in what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes - literally. Cameron seems to have more difficulty playing the career-driven father. The film is all about an uptight doctor who for a few days lives inside the body of his 16-year-old son, played by Kirk Cameron, while the son's mind takes over the body of his father. LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON - Dudley Moore is possessed by the mind of a 16-year-old, and he never disappoints in his adolescent, obsessive and thrill-seeking role.
